چکیده
CR: complete response EGFR: epidermal growth factor receptor EGFRi: epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors mTOR: mechanistic target of rapamycin SCCS: squamous cell cancers of skin INTRODUCTION Epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRi) are a class of targeted antineoplastics used for the palliative treatment of aggressive squamous cell cancers of skin (SCCS). Most reports describe the monoclonal antibody, cetuximab, or the small molecule, gefitinib. Response rates of SCCS to EGFRi are high, with complete response (CR) not uncommon. The molecular basis for susceptibility of SCCS to EGFRi remains unknown. A report found no EGFR mutations in SCCS of patients treated with gefitinib. Erlotinib is an orally available EGFRi approved for the treatment of lung and pancreatic cancer. Here we describe the courses of 5 patients with recurrent/ unresectable or metastatic SCCS who had palliative benefit from erlotinib. We also report the results of EGFR mutational analysis of their archived tumors. One of these patients was reported on previously in an abstract.

Mutations of p53 Gene in Skin Cancers: a Case Control Study
Background: The most frequently mutated tumor suppressor gene found in human cancer is p53. In a normal situation, p53 is activated upon the induction of DNA damage to either arrest the cell cycle or to induce apoptosis. However, when mutated, p53 is no longer able to properly accomplish these functions. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of p53 gene in cases of skin cancer...
متن کاملValue of CD10 Expression in Differentiating Cutaneous Basal from Squamous Cell Carcinomas and Basal Cell Carcinoma from Trichoepithelioma
Background: In addition to the well-defined histological criteria for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC), immunohistochemical techniques can be used in difficult cases for their differentiation. As differential diagnosis between trichoepithelioma (TE) and BCC is sometimes difficult for the clinician and the pathologist, CD10 may be a useful marker for definite diagnosi...
متن کاملImmunohistochemical expression of CD10 in cutaneous basal and squamous cell carcinomas
Background: Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common malignant tumor in humans. The role of ultraviolet radiation is well-known in the pathogenesis of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). CD10 is a zinc-dependent metallopeptidase known as common acute lymphoblastic leukemia antigen (CALLA). Although CD10 expression has been investigated in some cutaneous tu...
متن کاملComparative evaluation of the frequency of myofibroblasts between oral and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas
Introduction: Differentiation of fibroblasts to myofibroblasts is an initial and very important event in tumor genesis. Myofibroblasts produce proteinases that stimulate invasion in cancers. Due to the more malignant potential of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) compared to cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) , the aim of the present study was to compare myofibroblasts between OSCC and ...
متن کاملP53 and Ki67 protein expression in ocular squamous cell carcinomas of dairy cattle
Role of the protein overexpression is very important in the pathogenesis, diagnosis and prognosis of neoplasia. Cases of overexpression of p53 and Ki67 proteins were investigated in 19 ocular squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) in dairy cows. Microscopically, insix cases the tumors were carcinoma in situ (noninvasive carcinoma, G0), and in the remaining 13 cases the tumors were invasive carcinoma. ...
